I took a picture of this "poster" on the wall in my apartment. It comes from a ski competition that happened last year. I guess my roommates found it nice enough, and decided to keep it...
First, there are about 1000 inscriptions for the first year. In the end, they expect (statistics from past years) that about 250 of them will get to the second year. Now, you've got to consider that about 15% of these people are doing their first year a second time, so they are likely to pass this time. The percentage of people who pass their first year first shot, is about 10 to 20%. Ok, no problem.
Then, throughout the year, theachers use some techniques to test your ability to stay focussed on the final objective, which is: 7 final exams in June, of the whole year, one per subject, counting for 100% of the mark. Not bad...
During the year, the teacher sometimes gives a very hard exam (that doesn't count) to discourage some people, and it works, trust me.
I'm not here to complain about the way it works, because it has been going like that for many years, and it seem to work well so far. In fact, since people come from all over the world, they all have different backgroungs and scolarity. That's why it is not possible to make a selection at the beginning. Everybody gets a chance.
I've entered a big competition where only a few will cross the finish line.
The point is, the objective is not really to get the highest mark yourself...but to do better than the others. Of course, its nice to accomplish great things on your own, but the final objective stays the same.
This reality has the inconvenience of putting a lot of stress on people. In fact, you have to stay focussed on your work, do you best, and great things can happen. School of Life, as Alex, my roommate, told ma a couple days ago.
I'll keep up with the work, and I want to thank you guys again for your support, because it's not always easy to stay focussed. I'll do my best, we'll see what will happen!
