Whistler Time

I take the occasion of another successful week end in Whistler to post a few pictures I took just before coming back to Quebec for the holidays. As I'm writing those lines, I just arrived from a very wet week end (10-11 Jan) in the mountains where freezing level reached 1800 m. Having Whistler top at around 2100m, it means the better part of the slope was in slushi conditions and sometimes even putting breaks on the board while I was trying to surf down the mountain. We found good spots for thick and heavy knee deep powder!

Anyway, enough of that story telling, and lets get started with pictures I took on that beautiful last riding day of 2009 on that 19th of December. It was a great sunny day, not too much wind and not cold either, all conditions were there for a very nice day. I was on my own that day, and it enable me to go out there and hike some wicked spots for powder and go at my own rythm!

I then fight my way up to Whistler Peak for a hig-above-ground view of the surrounding valley

I  walk up solo and ride down Whistler Couloir that has an approx. 45 degrees incline!

I go to the extreme end of Whistler to the Symphony area...

...and start hiking (on the right side, you can see people on their way up) to go up on Flute Bowl!

I get to the top in about 20 minutes, have a lunch up there, and with a beautiful view of Blackcomb side, go down on one of the best fresh tracks of that day! (in the bowl on the right side)

To complete this magnificent day, I go up 7th Heaven, walk behind all the way across the BlackComb glacier, then up to the couloir that brings me back to the base of 7th Heaven.

Best track of that day; I was alone on the mountain, only two other tracks on that side, and lots of snow to float in!

Juste une autre fin de semaine de Ride!

3 jours à Whistler, qu'est-ce que l'on pourrait espérer de mieux en cette fin de premier semestre à Vancouver. Avant de commencer la course aux examens finaux, je part pour une ultime fin de semaine de ride en 2009. Jérome et moi prenons le bus à 6:00am de UBC. Nous arrivons à 8:15 et prenons la première gondole pour le "mid station" du côté Whistler.

Nous montons au sommet et survivons au froid glacial de -25 degrés avec des rafales de vent entre 50 et 70 km/h!! Jérôme et son célèbre chandail des Canadiens, étonnamment  très apprécié des gens sur la montagne, même étant dans la zone Canucks!

Plus tard dans la journée, Jérôme va rejoindre d'autres connaissances sur la montagne, et je termine la journée avec une hike en compagnie de Sebastian le Suédois sur le côté Blackcomb. Il pointe notre destination...qui nous a pris 45 min à atteindre...

Le lendemain, le froid est de retour, et après avoir réouvert une blessure interne au genou en atterrissant d'un big air côté Blackcomb, je prend le restant des 2 jours plus relax...

Le dernier jour, le froid est toujours présent, mais le vent a quelque peu diminué.

La fin de semaine tire à sa fin, le soleil se couche tranquillement derrière le sommet de Whistler...

...et l'horizon s'enflamme une dernière fois avant la descente de 8.5km qui me ramène à Whistler Village
